Player FAQ
Is equipment provided?
Yes! We have chess sets and clocks ready for your use. Technically they are ‘toys’, but we still expect players to treat them kindly.
Do I have to play with a clock?
In the interest of keeping things moving at a fair pace for all our players, most of our programming (outside of Casual Play and Free Play) requires clocks. We understand this may be spooky if you’re not used to them, but we promise, they’re not hard to use! Make your move, then press the clock (with the same hand you made your move), and then it will be your opponent’s turn. If you’re playing against someone who is new to ‘structured’ chess, we appreciate your patience as they learn how it works.
Do you have room for me?
We certainly have room for you as a member, but please note that our physical space capacity is 40 players in the main hall. We will do our best to adapt to community response, and we are working on plans for the future if we consistently hit our maximum.
Is membership required?
Not at all! The only events that require membership are our Friday member-exclusives. Non-members can drop in on weeknights for $5 per night. Weekend tournaments are open to all, often with best rates for members.
Do I have to stay the whole time?
For most days, you are welcome to come for as long or as little as you like, though if it’s a structured day we appreciate if you let the Director know that you are leaving. The exceptions are junior sectionals, and Quads, which require you to stay until the end as otherwise players might be left without an opponent. Even those will often finish early.
I’m newer to chess/not very good. What days should I try?
The best days to start with are Wednesdays (especially for ‘Casual Play’), or Friday/Saturday ‘Free Plays’. We don’t intend for any of our regular activities to be more than ‘friendly competition’, but those are the ones most suited for newer and lower-level players. Outside of that, it’s up to you what you would like to try! As long as you are enjoying yourself, you are not out of place.
Can you teach me how to play?
We sure can! Send us a note through our contact form about what you’re looking for and we’ll let you know as information becomes available on in-club lessons. Our Director of Operations, Michael, is an expert coach, and he also runs online junior group lessons in the Fall, Winter, and Spring, plus one-on-one lessons (as time allows) if you want fully tailored instruction.
